Apple Announces the iPhone Duo at $1,999, With Japan Sales From October 23
Apple announced its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, on September 9, 2026 in Cupertino, California.
According to Apple’s announcement, the device uses a 5.4-inch outer display when closed and opens sideways to a 7.6-inch inner display. Pre-orders in Japan open at 9 p.m. on October 16 and sales begin on October 23, with more than 70 countries in the first wave.
According to Apple’s own store pages, pricing starts at $1,999 in the United States and 364,800 yen in Japan for the 256GB model, rising to 574,800 yen for the 2TB model.
According to Apple’s specifications page, the closed body measures 84.1mm wide and 11.3mm thick and weighs 254 grams, while the opened body is 5.2mm thick. The frame and the hinge cover are grade 5 titanium, the hinge itself uses more than 100 components according to Apple’s announcement, and the device carries an IP68 dust and water rating. Touch ID sits in the side button, and the rear camera system has two lenses with no dedicated telephoto.
The software is iOS 27, and Apple says this is the first iPhone able to show two apps side by side. Support for Apple Pencil with USB-C is promised before the end of the year. The presentation was led by John Ternus, who became Apple’s chief executive on September 1, 2026, and who described the device as the most transformational change to the iPhone since the original.

Seven Years of Foldables, and Still 2 Percent of the Market
A foldable smartphone is a phone built around a display that bends, so that a device the size of a normal handset opens into something closer to a small tablet. The category has existed since 2019, and the iPhone Duo is Apple’s first entry into it.
Three Designs Arrived Together in 2019
Samsung announced the Galaxy Fold in 2019. Huawei followed days later with the Mate X, which wrapped its screen around the outside of the body, and Motorola revived the razr as a vertically folding clamshell before the year ended.
Those three shapes, the book-style device that opens to a large inner screen, the outward-folding device and the vertical flip, all appeared within a single year. Each answers a different want. Book-style designs exist to enlarge the screen when open, while flip designs exist to shrink the device when closed. The iPhone Duo is book-style, and this article follows that branch of the category.
The start was rough. Review units of the Galaxy Fold broke before launch, and Samsung delayed the release to redesign the hinge and the display stack. Foldables have been asked whether they survive daily use since the first week of the first model.
The Category Grew, and Stayed Small
Foldables still account for only about 2 percent of the overall smartphone market, according to Counterpoint Research’s analysis published on September 7, 2026. The same analysis expects cumulative foldable shipments since 2019 to pass 100 million units by the end of 2026.
Those two figures describe the same market from opposite sides. The category has grown every year, and the world still ships more than a billion smartphones annually, which makes eight years of cumulative foldable sales roughly a tenth of a single normal year.
Counterpoint’s September 2026 analysis also expects Apple to take second place inside the foldable market in its first year, behind Samsung, with up to 6 million units in 2026. That is a ranking inside a small category.
Huawei Leads Worldwide, Samsung Leads Everywhere Else
Huawei has led global foldable shipments through 2026, taking 48 percent of the category in the second quarter on total shipments of 3.4 million units, according to Smart Analytics Global’s July 2026 report. Huawei’s foldables sell overwhelmingly inside China, where premium buyers have adopted the format faster than buyers elsewhere.
Outside China, Samsung carries the category. The Galaxy Z Fold8, released in August 2026, is the eighth generation of that line and is sold in Japan by NTT Docomo. Motorola with its flip models, Honor with growing shipments outside China, and Google with the Pixel Fold since 2023 follow at a distance.
So Huawei leading worldwide and Samsung being the foldable people actually see in Japanese stores are the same picture from two angles. Apple is entering a market where Huawei arrived first in China and Samsung arrived first everywhere else.
A Market Shipping Fewer Phones for More Money
Units and revenue are moving in opposite directions in 2026. According to IDC’s forecast published on August 26, 2026, global smartphone shipments fall 16.7 percent this year to just over 1 billion units, with market value up 6.3 percent to 613 billion dollars and the average selling price up 27.6 percent to 581 dollars.
The cause is memory. NAND and DRAM prices have risen by more than 300 percent year on year on AI demand, according to the same IDC forecast, which describes the 173 million phones shipped below 100 dollars in the previous year as an endangered segment. The cheapest phones are the first ones that stop being buildable.
Apple is launching a 364,800 yen device into that market. IDC’s forecast reads the high end as comparatively resilient while the low end disappears, which makes an expensive new category the easiest kind of product to justify right now.
How Japanese Carriers Change the Number on the Price Tag
Buyers of expensive phones in Japan can use carrier return programs, under which the remaining installments are waived if the handset is returned after roughly two years. Stores advertise that reduced figure rather than the full price.
Foldables already sit inside that system. According to NTT Docomo’s product pages, the Galaxy Z Fold8 is listed at 301,180 yen, and Japanese information sites put the effective cost under the return program at roughly 60 percent of that. Keeping the handset means paying close to the full amount.
No Japanese carrier had announced pricing or availability for the iPhone Duo as of September 10, 2026. Those terms are expected around the October 16 pre-order date, and they will decide how the 364,800 yen figure actually reads to buyers in Japan.
| Device | Width closed | Thickness closed | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone Duo | 84.1mm | 11.3mm | 254g |
| iPhone 17 Pro | 71.9mm | 8.75mm | 206g |
| Galaxy Z Fold8 | about 82mm | about 9.7mm | about 201g |

What Apple’s Entry Moves, and What It Leaves in Place
You can now choose a foldable without leaving the iPhone
The first thing Apple’s entry changes is the range of the choice. People curious about foldables but unwilling to abandon iOS for one now have a device inside the platform they already use. That widens the pool of possible buyers even while the price and the weight stay high.
How many people actually move across from a conventional iPhone will show up in sales figures. The announcement thread on Reddit’s r/apple carried the sentiment directly, with users writing that they had always liked foldables but were not going to switch to Android for one. The size of that group is the first real test.
What Apple’s arrival changes about app support
App support is the question Apple’s entry moves most directly. Foldables were an Android-only market until this week, so an iOS developer had no reason to build a layout for a folding screen. A foldable iPhone creates that reason.
The work itself still belongs to developers. Apple’s developer guidance for the Duo asks apps to stop hard-coding screen dimensions, to handle a safe area that is asymmetric between left and right, and to adopt the components that drive side-by-side layouts. Apps that do nothing still run in a compatibility mode, and the quality of the large screen varies by app.
Apple named Netflix, Zoom and Slack among the apps already adapted. The first months will be a mix, with apps that already handle iPad multitasking arriving early and others taking longer. Apple changed the incentive. It did not do the work.
Why the iPhone Duo is heavier than every rival foldable
The Duo carries the format’s physical costs unchanged. Against Apple’s own comparison figures, the closed body is more than 12mm wider than the iPhone 17 Pro and nearly 50 grams heavier, and against Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 at about 201 grams on NTT Docomo’s product page, it is heavier again.
Two displays, two batteries and a hinge of more than 100 components add up to that mass, according to Apple’s own description of the device. Seven generations of competition have pushed the rest of the category toward lightness, and the Duo lands on the heavy side of it.
Checking a notification no longer requires opening anything, which is what the outer screen buys. Holding a body that wide in one hand asks for a different grip than a normal iPhone. The trade stays a trade.
Durability is the one question a launch event cannot answer
Apple describes a scratch-resistant coating on the inner display and a bonding layer that lets the display stack slide as the screen folds, which is how it addresses the visible crease. The titanium hinge and the IP68 rating belong to the same list.
The question splits four ways: whether the crease bothers the eye, whether the surface survives daily handling, whether the hinge survives repeated folding, and what a repair costs. An IP68 rating answers only the part about water and dust.
Apple has published no fold-cycle endurance figure. AppleCare+ for the Duo has been reported by the Japanese outlet ITmedia on September 10, 2026 as costing more than the equivalent plan for the Pro models, and out-of-warranty screen repair pricing had not been published as of that date.
The Galaxy Fold had display failures reported in its first weeks in 2019 and improved across later generations. Whether the Duo repeats that path or arrives stable will be visible only in owner reports six months and a year from now. Polish at an announcement and reliability across several years are separate measurements.
Apple selling well and foldables becoming ordinary are different outcomes
Analysts expect Apple to expand the category. Counterpoint Research’s September 2026 analysis puts Apple at a quarter of foldable shipments in its first year with strong category growth in 2027, and IDC has been reported as forecasting a similar direction with more than 10 million Apple units in the first year.
Counterpoint’s same analysis notes that initial supply will be constrained while production ramps, which means first-year volumes measure manufacturing and distribution as much as demand.
A larger category still would not settle the second question. In a market shipping fewer units at higher prices, a 364,800 yen foldable is easiest to describe as a new reason for high-end buyers to upgrade. That is a different achievement from foldables becoming the ordinary shape of a phone.
Improvement on all four questions still leaves the demand side open. If enough people simply do not want to fold anything, adoption stops there. Whether the Duo’s side-by-side mode and outer screen give people a reason to want it is part of what the next year measures.
Japanese Reactions to the iPhone Duo
What follows is a snapshot of the Japanese-language conversation on X in the hours after the announcement, not a measure of Japanese public opinion. No survey has asked Japanese consumers about the iPhone Duo. The pattern is still worth recording, because the criticism was strikingly specific. Almost nobody argued about Apple. They argued about 254 grams.

This was the post that carried the announcement furthest in Japanese, with roughly 1.3 million views. What it put in the headline was not the hinge or the software. It was the price.

That said, the iPhone Duo’s 254 grams is hard to accept. It is seriously heavy. Pack everything in and this is what you get, I suppose. For reference, Huawei’s Pura X Max manages 229 grams with a triple camera with variable aperture and pen support. Xiaomi’s Xiaomi 18 Fold is 219 grams. And Samsung’s light, thin Galaxy Z Fold8 is 201 grams.

The weight was the single most repeated complaint in Japanese, and this post is the one that put numbers around it. The figures for the Huawei and Xiaomi devices are the author’s own and are not independently verified here, though the Galaxy Z Fold8 at about 201 grams matches NTT Docomo’s published specification.

I am not out to nitpick, but the iPhone Duo weighs 254 grams. That is fairly heavyweight.
Then the button placement. Closed, the volume keys are on the top edge. The side has the side button and the camera control. How much does anyone actually use the camera control? I never used mine at all. Without it, I think the volume keys could have fitted on the side too, though if there are enough camera-control devotees out there I will get told off for saying so. Sorry.

The same number arrived from the enthusiast side of the audience rather than the critical one. A specialist and a fan reached the same objection within twenty minutes of each other.

Apple’s foldable, the iPhone Duo, starts at 364,800 yen in Japan.
A lot of people seem to assume the conversion is being done at 180 yen or more to the dollar, but the Apple Store lists prices tax-inclusive, so the actual rate works out to about 165.9 yen. (It is still expensive, mind you.)
Gizmodo Japan, September 10, 2026
Japanese complaints about Apple pricing usually route through the exchange rate, and this time a technology outlet closed that route within hours by pointing out that the Japanese figure includes consumption tax. The price stayed a complaint. The yen stopped being the explanation for it.

Tech Talks on optimizing apps for iPhone Duo have been published, covering both design and technology, so please take a look.
The matching version of Xcode, including the Device Hub simulator, is due to arrive later as a beta.
Shun Takeishi, September 10, 2026
The developer side of the Japanese conversation was not about whether the device is desirable. It was about a schedule, with the simulator needed to test folding layouts still to come. That is the app-support question in its concrete form: the announcement created the reason to adapt, and the tools to do it arrive on their own timeline.
Taken together, the Japanese reaction in the first half day moved from sharing the specifications to asking whether the thing is usable and who has to rebuild for it. The loudest single post of all was a two-word expression of desire with no mention of price or weight, which is a reminder that attention and adoption are measured separately.
Users and Developers Now Face the Format at the Same Time
What the iPhone Duo changes is that iPhone owners and iOS developers are both looking at a folding screen for the first time. The category has grown for seven years and still sits at about 2 percent of smartphone shipments, according to Counterpoint Research’s September 2026 analysis, and the four questions of price, portability, durability and app support each get a different answer from Apple’s arrival.
Launch-week volumes will say more about supply than about adoption. The number that matters is whether foldable shipments as a whole keep climbing with the Duo included, because that is where an actual shift from conventional iPhones would appear.
App quality becomes visible over the following months, as developers decide whether an opened screen shows a stretched phone layout or a genuinely different way of working. Durability answers last, in owner reports about creases, scratches, hinges and repair bills after six months and a year of use. When those three arrive together, the question of whether foldables can leave the category of expensive things for enthusiasts finally has an answer.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does the iPhone Duo cost?
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the United States and 364,800 yen in Japan for the 256GB model, according to Apple’s store pages, rising to 574,800 yen for the 2TB version. Japanese carriers had not announced their own pricing or installment terms as of September 10, 2026, which matters because return programs in Japan typically cut the advertised cost of a comparable foldable to roughly 60 percent of the outright price.
What share of the smartphone market do foldable phones actually have?
About 2 percent. Counterpoint Research’s analysis published on September 7, 2026 states that foldables still account for only about 2 percent of the overall smartphone market, while cumulative foldable shipments since 2019 are expected to pass 100 million units by the end of 2026. Counterpoint expects Apple to reach second place within the foldable category in its first year, behind Samsung.
Is the iPhone Duo heavier than other foldables?
Yes. The iPhone Duo weighs 254 grams according to Apple’s specifications page, against about 201 grams for Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 on NTT Docomo’s product page and 206 grams for the conventional iPhone 17 Pro on Apple’s comparison page. Closed, the Duo is also more than 12mm wider than the iPhone 17 Pro.
How did Japanese social media react to the iPhone Duo?
Japanese reaction concentrated on weight rather than on Apple. The 254 gram figure was raised within the same hour by the hardware journalist Yasuhiro Yamane, who compared it with lighter foldables from Huawei, Xiaomi and Samsung, and by mainstream gadget streamers. Price was the other theme, though Gizmodo Japan closed off the usual exchange-rate explanation on September 10, 2026 by noting that Japanese Apple Store prices include consumption tax, putting the implied rate near 165.9 yen to the dollar.
